Montana voters weigh bid to limit corporate election spending
Initiative 194 would use corporate law to limit organizations’ election spending; Moore expects the issue to reach the Supreme Court
Montana voters head to the polls Tuesday to decide on Initiative 194, a ballot measure that would redefine the legal powers granted to corporations and other 'artificial persons' rather than ban corporate political donations outright, an approach its backers say gets around the 2010 Citizens United ruling. If passed, the measure would prevent corporations, trade associations and nonprofits from spending money to support or oppose candidates or ballot initiatives in Montana, though individuals and political action committees would remain able to donate.
