Geologists offer explanation for Earth’s missing layer of up to a billion years
New research published in Nature uses supercomputer models to link the Great Unconformity to mantle convection and Snowball Earth ice sheets
Geologists have offered an explanation for the Great Unconformity, a gap in Earth’s rock record where up to a billion years of geological history is missing. Research published today in Nature by University of Wollongong scientists presents evidence that deep mantle convection lifted continents high above the sea, where enormous ice sheets would have scoured away overlying sediment.
