Somali institutions to take on full responsibility for recovery as UN political mission closes
UNTMIS leaves behind institutional progress, but a complex crisis, fragile economy and threat from Al-Shabaab remain
The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) closed on 31 October, ending three decades of UN political missions in the Horn of Africa nation. With the mission’s closure, Somali institutions will take on full responsibility for the country's recovery, with support from UN agencies already working in the country, as Somalia faces a complex crisis, a fragile economy and the threat from Al-Shabaab.
