More than a third of Welsh prison leaver deaths drug-related, report finds
Cardiff University report urges politicians to tackle 'systematic failures' as rate exceeds England and Wales average
More than a third of deaths among former prisoners on probation in Wales in 2024-25 were drug related, a higher proportion than across England and Wales as a whole, according to a new report. The Wales Governance Centre at Cardiff University, which published the study, is urging politicians to tackle "systematic failures" in the criminal justice system, and author Dr Robert Jones has called on the UK and Welsh governments to find a solution to what he called the "tragic" situation.
