The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has rescheduled the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia from January to December 2027, citing the ongoing regional conflict and resulting logistical complexities and travel disruptions.

The AFC announced the decision on Tuesday, moving the 24-team competition from a January 7, 2027, start to December 23, 2027, with the tournament scheduled to run through January 21, 2028.

Asian football's governing body said the decision followed “extensive discussions and close consultation with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF)”.

“The organising committee for the AFC Asian Cup approved rescheduling the tournament in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions,” the AFC’s statement added.

Saudi Arabia has faced repeated attacks from Yemen’s Houthis since September, with Riyadh among cities hit by missiles. The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen reported on Friday that it “intercepted and destroyed” a drone launched by the Houthis towards Saudi Arabia’s Mecca region. It was also reported that a missile aimed at western Saudi Arabia had been brought down earlier. Hostilities between the Riyadh-backed Yemen government and Iran-backed Houthis continue to escalate.

The tournament’s fate had been uncertain in recent weeks, with several participating nations expressing concerns about the security situation. The AFC said while “exceptional circumstances” had been created for the organisation and delivery of the competition as originally scheduled, the postponement became necessary “in the interest of all participating teams, officials, spectators and other stakeholders”.

The AFC will submit the new tournament dates to FIFA for approval.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The rescheduling avoids a January start that would have been logistically risky and unsafe given the conflict
  • It gives participating teams, officials and fans clarity after weeks of uncertainty over the tournament's fate
  • The decision reflects how the regional conflict is spilling over into major international sporting events

Background

Saudi Arabia is hosting the 24-team Asian Cup for the first time. The tournament was originally scheduled to kick off in Riyadh on January 7, 2027. Since September, the Houthi group in Yemen has intensified attacks on Saudi territory, including strikes on Riyadh and other cities. The Saudi-led coalition has been intercepting missiles and drones, but the security situation has raised concerns among participating nations.

Key Perspectives

AFC: said the rescheduling was necessary due to “exceptional circumstances” and was approved after consultations with the local organising committee and the Saudi football federation.

Participating nations (reportedly): several expressed concerns about the security situation before the decision was made.

What to Watch

  • Whether FIFA approves the new dates
  • Whether any teams withdraw or request further changes
  • Whether the security situation in the region improves or deteriorates before December 2027
