Forecasting an epidemic or an economy usually means building a bespoke model for each dataset. Most existing pretrained models avoid retraining but treat each measurement series alone, missing links like weather driving energy use.
Chronos-2 is trained once on synthetic data. At inference, it reads the history and infers relationships among series, a technique called in-context learning; its group-attention mechanism then produces probabilistic forecasts, giving a range of likely futures, with no task-specific tuning.
In benchmarks, it beat the strongest baselines, improving forecast skill by 5.2 percentage points and win rate by 10 percentage points. It matched or beat specialized models in disease, macroeconomics, carbon flux, and hydrology, suggesting one general model can replace many custom ones.
