Anthropic is rolling out a Personal Finance beta for its Claude AI chatbot, giving it read-only access to users' bank accounts through the Plaid data platform to help answer questions about spending, bills and affordability.

The feature, rolling out this week to Claude Pro, Max and Ultra plan subscribers in the US, allows users to ask the chatbot where their money went in a given month. Claude can produce a breakdown of spending by category including rent, utilities, shopping and food, and answer broader questions about upcoming bills, whether a large purchase such as a holiday trip is affordable, and how much money could be saved each month.

Plaid facilitates the connection, so Claude does not see banking passwords and the bank does not have to deal with unvetted AI bots crawling around accounts. According to Anthropic, Claude cannot move, manage or invest money, and it “isn’t designed to give investment advice.” The chatbot can see the bank’s name, account names, account type, the last four digits of the number associated with it, balances and credit limits, and up to two years of transaction history.

The move follows a similar feature OpenAI introduced for ChatGPT in May, which also uses Plaid to link bank accounts.

“Personal Finance is a first step,” Anthropic said in a press release. “For life’s bigger money decisions, we think people are best served by Claude working alongside the licensed professionals and regulated firms they trust. We’re exploring how to make that possible in Claude, and we’d like to hear from banks, wealth managers, and financial services companies who want to help shape it.”

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • Users gain a convenient way to track spending via conversation, but must weigh the privacy implications of granting an AI read-only access to up to two years of transaction data.
  • The feature opens a new competitive front between Anthropic and OpenAI, both moving beyond general-purpose chatbots into personal financial management.
  • Anthropic’s stated interest in partnering with banks and wealth managers signals that this initial consumer feature could expand into more complex advisory services, pending regulatory and security considerations.

Background

AI assistants have begun integrating with personal financial data, a shift that promises convenience but raises privacy and security questions. Plaid acts as a trusted intermediary that allows apps to retrieve account information without exposing login credentials. OpenAI’s ChatGPT introduced a similar Plaid-linked budgeting feature in May, and Anthropic’s entry deepens the trend of general-purpose chatbots taking on tasks once handled by specialised personal-finance apps.

What to Watch

  • Whether Anthropic expands Personal Finance to subscribers outside the US, and which markets it targets next.
  • Regulatory reaction, particularly from financial authorities, to AI chatbots accessing transaction histories and making financial recommendations.
  • Announcements of formal partnerships with banks or wealth-management firms, which Anthropic has invited as part of its next phase.
