Apple ended today's hardware event with a "One more thing" reveal, debuting the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone after years of speculation. The device is the most capable and most expensive iPhone ever, but at a starting price of $1,999 it is in the same range as foldables from Google and Samsung.
The iPhone Duo features a wider, shorter chassis, a design that Apple framed as a correction to foldables that open into a square aspect ratio. Apple argued that the square shape is poor for single apps and video playback, causing awkward stretching and large black bars. The phone comes in two colors: white and dark blue.
Earlier reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, published hours before the event, had suggested a starting price of $2,000 for the 256GB model and up to $3,000 for a 2TB version. The official starting price of $1,999 closely aligns with those rumors. Shipping is expected to begin in October.
The iPhone Duo arrives after Samsung made waves with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 earlier this year, which also adopted a wider, shorter form factor. Apple's foldable enters a market that has matured over nearly a decade since the first commercial foldable phones appeared.
