Boxing coach Louis Meehan, 32, was shot multiple times and killed in the car park of a community centre in Punchbowl, Sydney, on Wednesday evening, with police investigating whether the attack is linked to outlaw motorcycle gang activity.

Police confirmed on Thursday that the victim of Wednesday night's fatal shooting in Sydney's south-west was 32-year-old boxing coach Louis Meehan. Officers were called to the car park of a community centre on Canterbury Road, Punchbowl, about 5:50pm, where they found Mr Meehan suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Despite paramedics' efforts, he died at the scene.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Grant Taylor of the State Crime Command told 702 ABC Sydney that early inquiries suggest the shooting was not connected to the spate of recent shootings that have occurred across Sydney. However, he said Mr Meehan's history "correlates with activities in and around outlaw motorcycle gangs [OMCGs]".

"There are some early indications that this incident has no correlation or linkage with what's been transpiring over the last several months," Mr Taylor said. "This may be related to OMCG activity or some sort of other activity, but we don't believe in the early stages of this investigation that it's linked to the other matters."

Police said a stolen silver Lexus sedan was seen fleeing the area and was later located in Bass Hill. On Wednesday night, Acting Superintendent Dean Johnstone described the shooting as a "callous act" and confirmed the victim was known to police.

Witness Danielle Kind, who was at the scene with her son, told reporters she saw a man approach from the side before shots were fired. "I saw this man walking that way, and then someone ran up from the side and behind him … then bang, bang," she said. Ms Kind said she hid behind a car instinctively before crossing the road to hold the victim's hand and pray.

About a dozen children were inside the community centre when the shooting occurred. "This act could have easily endangered other members of the community," Superintendent Johnstone said. "In a public place like this … it's very fortunate, and we're very grateful that no other person has been injured."

Tributes to Mr Meehan were posted on his social media accounts from members of the boxing community on Thursday morning.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The shooting occurred in a public space with children present, raising concerns about community safety in Sydney's south-west.
  • If confirmed as OMCG-related, it would add to the pattern of gang violence in the city, though police currently believe it is separate from recent shootings.
  • The targeted nature of the attack and the victim's known history suggest possible escalation or retaliation within criminal networks.

Background

Sydney has experienced a series of gang-related shootings in recent months, prompting increased police operations and the introduction of serious crime prevention orders. While the full extent of those incidents has not been detailed here, authorities have been working to stem violence linked to organised crime and outlaw motorcycle gangs. The Punchbowl shooting appears distinct from that pattern according to initial police assessments, but the investigation remains in its early stages.

Key Perspectives

Police: Emphasise that the shooting was targeted and that the victim's history points to OMCG involvement, but they do not currently believe it is connected to the broader spate of shootings. They are seeking the lone gunman who fled in a stolen Lexus. Boxing community: Tributes on social media highlight Mr Meehan's role as a coach, suggesting a side of his life separate from any alleged gang ties. Local residents and witnesses: The presence of children inside the community centre and the witness's harrowing account underscore the potential for collateral harm in public shootings.

What to Watch

  • Whether police establish a definitive link to OMCGs and identify the gunman.
  • Any response or retaliation within criminal circles that could spark further violence.
  • The outcome of forensic analysis on the stolen Lexus and any CCTV footage from the community centre.
