Chrome has officially switched to a two-week release schedule from its previous four-week cadence, with Tuesday's launch of Chrome 153, as Google announced earlier this year. The move is tied to the company's evolving security strategy in the age of AI. According to Google, automated AI tools and community bug reports have increased the volume of patches and updates, making a shorter release cycle more manageable.
Faster-moving threats, some attributed to AI, can be better addressed by reducing the time between landing a fix in the codebase and getting it to end users, the company notes. The shorter schedule helps keep the "N-day" patch gap—the time between a vulnerability becoming known and being patched—as small as possible.
The faster cadence also allows Chrome to ship features more quickly. Google says that AI-assisted software development has enabled a host of new browser competitors, including Brave, Dia, Opera Neon, Perplexity's Comet, and DuckDuckGo's browser. In addition, Google is experimenting with adding more AI features to Chrome and then rapidly iterating on them, which further demands faster updates.
Because Chrome is the most widely used browser globally, the change is expected to set an industry standard. Mozilla, Microsoft, and Brave have already adopted a two-week release schedule, following Chrome's lead.
