CloudNC, which launched in 2015 under co-founders Theo Saville and Chris Emery, makes AI-powered CAM Assist software that plugs into traditional computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems such as Autodesk Fusion and Mastercam. The software automates parts of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining, the process by which computer-controlled machines cut and shape materials into parts for industries like automotive, defense, and consumer hardware.
Saville, the company’s co-founder and CEO, told TechCrunch that traditional CAM systems remain largely manual. “Traditional CAM systems are powerful, but in most workflows, they are still tools that allow programmers to manually specify how a part should be machined,” he said. The company’s CAM Assist software instead generates an execution strategy, selecting suitable tools, approach directions, and cutting feeds and speeds, then drafting the code needed to drive the CNC machine.
Saville emphasized that the goal is to make skilled workers more efficient, not replace them. “If traditional CAM is a powerful toolkit, then CAM Assist is more like an expert assistant sitting alongside the programmer, automating much of the first-pass thinking and repetitive setup so the human can review, improve, and approve the approach,” he said.
According to the company, more than 1,000 machine shops worldwide use CAM Assist, and 80% of its customer base is in the U.S. CloudNC employs 80 people. The company’s last major raise was four years ago; the new extension comes as the business focuses on what Saville described as its biggest goal, though details beyond that were not disclosed in the announcement.
