Wright's resignation after three seasons comes amid senior players' concerns about a lack of improvement and direction in the program. Captain Ruby Schleicher has already decided not to re-sign, instead returning to Western Australia, and Collingwood faces a potential exodus of out-of-contract players including Tarni White, Sarah Rowe, Mattea Breed, Lauren Butler and Bri Davey.
In a statement, Wright said it had been a privilege to work for the Collingwood AFLW program and extended his thanks to players, coaches, staff, members and supporters. "While these decisions are never easy, I know it is the right one for my family and the football program as we move forward," he said. He added that he leaves knowing the club is committed to driving its AFLW program forward.
Collingwood CEO Craig Kelly also released a statement thanking Wright for his contribution and care. "Sam has led our AFLW program with genuine care, and we will recognise his contribution following our final game of the season this weekend," Kelly said.
Sunday's round 12 match against Essendon at Windy Hill will be Wright's final game. Essendon also has a one-win season and is losing senior coach Natalie Wood. St Kilda, which is below both clubs on the ladder, recently parted ways with Nick Dal Santo and is also seeking a new senior coach.
