An elderly couple died when a fire engulfed their home in Caerphilly last December after a portable gas heater exploded during refuelling, an inquest has heard. Assistant coroner Sarah Le Fevre recorded their deaths as accidental.

Marlene Mumford, 84, and William Mumford, 90, died at their property on Hoel Fawr, Caerphilly, on 12 December 2025. The inquest in Newport was told that the most likely cause of the fire was a mechanical or connection failure with the gas heater. Assistant coroner Sarah Le Fevre said it was believed William Mumford had attempted to carry the cylinder out of the home to remove it, but that this had caused the flames to spread. She recorded the deaths as an accident, the result of an "unintended act with unforeseen circumstance".

The alarm was raised by a neighbour at the nearby Tyler's Arms who noticed smoke and large flames. He and another man ran to the house and saw a gas canister explode near the front porch, with flames rising above the height of the house. Emergency services could not initially enter the property due to the extent of the damage. Firefighters reported thick, black smoke "pumping out" of the property. The couple were pronounced dead at the scene.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • Highlights the risks of portable gas heaters, especially for elderly residents who may refuel indoors
  • Raises questions about safety instructions and product design for such heaters
  • Underscores the importance of neighbour vigilance in spotting fires early

Background

Portable gas heaters are commonly used in UK homes, particularly by elderly people who may rely on them for supplementary heating. Safety guidelines typically warn against refuelling indoors and recommend keeping cylinders upright and well away from ignition sources. The specific make and model of the heater involved in this incident have not been disclosed publicly.

Key Perspectives

Fire safety experts: Likely to emphasise that gas cylinders should never be refilled or handled by untrained individuals inside a home, and that proper ventilation and placement are critical. Elderly care advocates: May point to the need for better support and check-ins for older people living alone, as well as clearer warnings on heater packaging. The coroner: Recorded an accidental death, noting the couple died as a result of an unintended act with unforeseen circumstances, without attributing blame.

What to Watch

  • Whether the manufacturer or regulator issues a safety notice regarding the specific heater model
  • Any renewed campaign by fire services urging safe use of portable gas heaters
  • Potential for coroner recommendations to be made to prevent similar tragedies
