In an Instagram post, Svitolina wrote of the difficult journey since the 2022 invasion. "This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to share," she said. "Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. What I have rarely spoken about is what the war has done to me inside." She described sleepless nights, doubts, and the feeling of "slowly losing myself".
Svitolina said Monfils saw her struggles and never let go of her hand. "We fought through this together for a long time, with everything we had. But some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you."
The couple married in July 2021 and have a daughter, Skai, born in October 2022. They competed together in mixed doubles at the 2026 US Open. Svitolina stressed there was no one to blame. "Our marriage is ending, but our family is not. We will always be her parents, side by side, at every step of her life." She asked for privacy and kindness.
Meanwhile, the International Tennis Integrity Agency now lists Monfils as retired. The 40-year-old former world No.6 had planned to retire at the end of 2026. Svitolina, a four-time grand slam semi-finalist, recently qualified for the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, California.
