Police have named the man shot dead in a targeted attack at a north London pub as 35-year-old Erdem Mustafa. Officers were called to the Sun and Woolpack on Hertford Road in Enfield on Monday, October 19, where Mustafa was treated for gunshot wounds but died at the scene. Detectives have released a CCTV image of a person they wish to speak to, though it remains unclear whether the individual is a man or woman, or if they are wearing a disguise.

The Metropolitan Police have launched a murder investigation after Erdem Mustafa was shot at the Sun and Woolpack pub in Enfield on Monday evening. Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance attended, but Mustafa was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Chief Inspector Allam Bhangoo, leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts remain with Erdem’s loved ones following what is undoubtedly a tragic and senseless act that led to his death. We recognise local concerns following this incident and while detectives are keeping an open mind, we believe this to be a targeted attack."

A CCTV image has been released of a person police are keen to identify. A force spokesperson said it was "unclear at this early stage whether this was a man or woman, or if the person is wearing a disguise."

Chief Superintendent Anna Mccartney, who leads policing in the area, said: "We continue to recognise the concern local people have after this incident and can reassure them that detectives are working at pace to find those responsible for Erdem’s death. Extra officers remain in the area to offer further reassurance."

No arrests have been made. Police are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV, doorbell, dashcam or mobile phone footage to come forward. Anyone with information can contact police on 101 quoting CAD 7050/19OCT26, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The shooting has heightened local concerns about gun violence in Enfield, a suburban area of north London not typically associated with such incidents.
  • Police are treating the attack as targeted, suggesting it may be linked to organised crime or personal disputes, which could indicate broader patterns of violence.
  • The investigation remains at an early stage, and the outcome may affect community trust in policing and public safety perceptions.

Background

Enfield is a borough in north London with a mix of residential and commercial areas. While London has seen a reduction in gun crime in recent years, targeted shootings still occur, often involving gangs or criminal networks. The Sun and Woolpack pub is a local establishment on Hertford Road, a busy thoroughfare. Police have deployed extra officers to reassure the community as the investigation continues.

Key Perspectives

Police: Detectives believe the attack was targeted and are working urgently to identify those responsible. They have released a CCTV image and are appealing for public help, emphasising that no detail is too small. Extra patrols have been deployed to address local concern. Community: Residents and pub-goers are likely to be disturbed by the daylight shooting at a local venue. Police acknowledge local concerns and are seeking to maintain reassurance through visible policing. Victim’s Family: Specialist officers are supporting Erdem Mustafa’s family, who have been informed of his death. The family’s private grief is being respected, and no statement from them has been reported.

What to Watch

  • Whether the person in the CCTV image is identified and what their connection to the incident may be.
  • Any arrests or further police activity in Enfield over the coming days.
  • Potential statements from the family or community leaders as the investigation develops.
