Illustration: Fal raises $1.3B at a $16B valuation as demand for AI inference surges
Fal, a San Francisco startup that hosts and runs AI video, image and audio models, has raised $1.3 billion in a funding round led by Bessemer Venture Partners, valuing the company at $16 billion, Bloomberg reported. That is double the $8 billion valuation it held in April. Nvidia, Sound Ventures and T. Rowe Price also participated in the round.

Fal announced its Series E and Series F rounds at the same time, saying it raised a combined $1.65 billion across both. Sequoia led the earlier round.

The company's business is inference: running an AI model that has already been trained so it can generate outputs. Demand for that service has been climbing, particularly among customers relying on open-source models, and Fal surpassed $800 million in annualized revenue earlier this year, according to Bloomberg's report.

Baseten, Fireworks AI and Modal have also been expanding rapidly and raising large rounds at higher valuations. But their gross margins remain thin because of the high cost of buying or leasing compute, according to several people familiar with inference companies' financials.

Fal was co-founded in 2021 by Burkay Gur, a former machine learning leader at Coinbase and an engineer at Oracle, and Gorkem Yurtseven, who was previously a developer at Amazon.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • Fal's valuation doubling in about seven months is a marker of how much investor money is flowing into inference, the less publicised half of the AI stack, rather than into model training alone.
  • Nvidia's participation shows the chipmaker continuing to back the companies that consume its hardware, tying demand for compute to the fortunes of the startups that rent it.
  • Thin gross margins across inference providers suggest that rapid revenue growth in this segment does not automatically translate into healthy profits.

Background

Inference is the stage of AI deployment where a trained model is put to work producing video, images, audio or text. It has become a distinct business from model development, with some companies specialising in hosting open-source models for others to use. Fal, founded in 2021, is one of several startups competing in that market, alongside Baseten, Fireworks AI and Modal, all of which the source describes as growing fast and raising large rounds.

What to Watch

  • Whether Fal's reported revenue growth continues at the pace that justified doubling its valuation within months.
  • Gross margins across inference providers, which the source says are held down by the cost of buying or leasing compute.
  • The pricing and funding trajectory of rivals Baseten, Fireworks AI and Modal, which compete for the same customers.
