Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral procession at the Sheikh Radwan Cemetery before the remains were buried. Wrapped in Palestinian flags, the remains consisted of some body parts and personal belongings recovered from the Daraj neighbourhood in northeastern Gaza City.
Al Jazeera correspondent Nour Khaled reported that the majority of the victims were women and children who were inside their homes when they were targeted.
Abdullah al-Majdalawi, director of public relations and media for the Gaza Civil Defence, told the Anadolu news agency that the remains were recovered over recent weeks from several destroyed buildings in Daraj. The buildings were bombed while residents were inside during the early months of the war, he said, adding that the victims belonged to about 20 Palestinian families, including displaced people who had been sheltering in the homes.
Efforts to recover bodies from beneath the rubble continue to face severe difficulties due to a lack of heavy equipment and machinery, al-Majdalawi added.
The Civil Defence launched the second phase of its recovery operations in July. During its first operation in November 2025, it recovered 333 bodies and the remains of 559 people. The agency believes the remains of another 8,000 Palestinians are still trapped beneath the rubble across Gaza.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, reports that about 200,000 buildings have been damaged or destroyed in Gaza. At least 74,475 Palestinians have been killed since the war began three years ago, according to the Ministry of Health.
