A jewellery advertisement in India has been withdrawn after online critics objected to actor Kriti Sanon’s outfit, calling it unsuitable for the traditional Rakhi festival. The ad, which was intended to celebrate the sibling bond festival, showed Sanon in a modern ensemble that some users deemed disrespectful to Hindu customs.
Sanon, a prominent Bollywood actor, defended the campaign in a statement, arguing that the portrayal was not intended to offend and that fashion evolves with tradition. “Rakhi is about love between siblings, not rigid dress codes,” she said. The brand, whose name has not been publicly confirmed by all sources, removed the ad from its platforms without a detailed explanation, citing respect for customer sentiments.
The backlash reflects broader tensions in India, where conservative social media users frequently call out celebrities and brands for perceived religious insensitivity. The incident follows similar controversies over film costumes, wedding attire, and festival campaigns in recent years.
Supporters of Sanon argue that the criticism unfairly targets women’s choices and stifles artistic expression. Critics, however, maintain that public figures have a responsibility to honour cultural norms when marketing traditional festivals.
The brand’s quick decision to pull the ad underscores the pressure companies face in India’s polarized online environment, where hashtag campaigns can rapidly escalate and affect sales. The Rakhi festival, observed in August, involves sisters tying sacred threads on brothers’ wrists, symbolizing protection and affection.
