The ferry, carrying 420 passengers and 40 crew, was engulfed in flames as it neared the port, with vision circulating online showing large fires on the vessel. Rescue teams and local fishing boats rushed to the scene, and fire crews worked to contain the blaze. All 460 people were safely evacuated, with 11 taken to a local hospital in nearby Cilegon for medical treatment, according to Xinhua news.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Merak is one of Indonesia's busiest ferry routes, connecting Java with Sumatra. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the country's maritime safety record. Last month, a passenger ferry sank in the Java Sea, killing 80 of 243 people on board, with 55 still missing. In August, a ferry fire off Madura Island killed five and left 41 missing. In July, a ferry sank in the Bali Strait, leaving 19 dead and 17 missing.
