Israel's defence minister confirmed on Tuesday that a senior Hamas operative had been arrested during a military operation in Gaza City, declining to name the individual or specify which forces carried out the capture. Speaking after meeting residents of Netiv HaAsara, a community near the northern Gaza border, Katz said the activity of Israeli forces in the territory "continues at all times".
"A short time ago, a senior Hamas terrorist was arrested – and this is our policy: we do not wait for threats, but pursue Hamas terrorists, thwart them and destroy their terror infrastructures," Katz added.
The announcement came amid reports of a joint operation involving Israeli special forces and an Israel-backed Palestinian militia, which triggered air strikes that medics said killed three people – two children and a woman – in the Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City. A separate incident in central Gaza reportedly killed a third child.
Hamas has not commented publicly on the reported capture. The Israeli military has not released further details on the identity of the detained commander or the circumstances of the raid.
