At least five people have been killed and more than a dozen wounded in Gaza in Israeli ground and air attacks, with four Palestinians, including a seven-year-old girl, killed in a strike on a camp for displaced people in Khan Younis, medical sources and first responders said.
Palestinian Civil Defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal said 11 people had been killed and 50 wounded by Israeli fire and air strikes across Gaza in the past 24 hours.
"We transported three martyrs, including a child, following an Israeli air strike targeting a camp for displaced people in the al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis," Basal told the AFP news agency.
Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis confirmed the three deaths, which have since risen to at least four, a source at the Gaza emergency services told Al Jazeera. "Their bodies were torn apart by direct hits from shrapnel from the Israeli missile," the hospital said, adding that several wounded people, including a child and a woman, had also come in for treatment. The hospital identified three of the dead as Hossam al-Zamli, 21, Tamer Abu Sneima, 24, and Jouri al-Soufi, seven, according to Gaza's Ministry of Education.
In a separate attack, another person was killed and others wounded in an Israeli drone attack on the Remal neighbourhood west of Gaza City, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported. Al-Shifa Hospital said the man was killed when the drone struck a group of displaced people in a tent.
Israeli forces also set fire to a camp for displaced people at the Shujayea junction on Sunday night, forcibly displacing more than 200 families, or over 800 people, most of them women, children, elderly people and patients, according to Gaza's Ministry of Public Works and Housing. The ministry said Israeli quadcopter drones set the camp ablaze at about 8pm, with fires consuming tents and belongings for several hours, continuing past midnight. It condemned the incident and called for urgent international aid to provide the displaced families with shelter and essential supplies.
Medical sources cited by Al Jazeera said 1,559 people have been killed and 5,608 wounded since the United States-brokered ceasefire began on October 11 last year, and that at least 74,555 people have been killed and 175,727 injured over the course of the war, with a large number of victims still trapped under the rubble and out of reach of rescue crews.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- The strikes and the fire hit camps for displaced people, the sites where hundreds of thousands of civilians have sought shelter; the Shujayea blaze alone pushed more than 800 people out of their tents.
- The deaths come despite the United States-brokered ceasefire that took effect on October 11 last year, deepening questions about whether it is holding.
- Gaza authorities have appealed for urgent international aid to provide the displaced families with shelter and essential supplies.
Background
The reporting describes a United States-brokered ceasefire that took effect on October 11 last year, but continued Israeli air and ground operations, with medical sources saying 1,559 people have been killed since it began, on top of a war toll of more than 74,000 dead. All of the accounts in this report come from Palestinian medical sources, hospitals, first responders and Gaza government ministries.
What to Watch
- Whether the death toll from Monday's attacks rises; medical sources said many victims remain trapped under the rubble and beyond the reach of rescue crews.
- How the international community responds to the burning of the Shujayea camp and the Gaza ministry's appeal for urgent aid and shelter.
- Whether further attacks on camps for displaced people follow, as strikes and displacement continue despite the ceasefire.
