Kali Linux has released version 2026.3, its third release this year, featuring six new hacking tools, desktop environment improvements and refreshed build scripts. The distribution, designed for ethical hackers and cybersecurity professionals carrying out red-teaming, penetration testing, security assessments and network research, is available as an installable OS or live environment and supports hardware from Raspberry Pi devices to Android phones via Kali NetHunter.
The release updates 126 packages, adds new libraries and upgrades the kernel from 6.19 to 7.1.5. The six new tools are dalfox, an open-source XSS scanner focused on automation; katana, a next-generation crawling and spidering framework; qsreplace, which replaces query string values on URLs supplied via stdin; rustscan, a modern port scanner; sdrangel, a Qt-based software-defined radio front-end; and snaffler-ng, an SMB share credential and sensitive data scanner.
Desktop updates bring KDE Plasma 6.7 with performance improvements, integrated Intel GPU power-usage improvements and workflow optimisations, including per-screen virtual desktops. "Moving around those desktops is also quicker from the Overview, while support for additional Wayland protocols and portals continues to improve the experience on modern Linux setups," the Kali developers said. Network connections can now be duplicated, and System Monitor has received further refinements.
The release also refreshes the build scripts used to generate official Kali images, adding support for Docker and Podman containers. "We've brought consistency to our build-scripts across platforms. Each one now has the same features, command-line arguments, structure and layout (where possible), and the same look and feel," the announcement said. Not all scripts were refreshed in time for 2026.3; the team aims to have them all ready for Kali 2026.4 and to automate builds and workflows in the next stage.
Existing installations can upgrade with apt commands, new users can download ISO images, and Windows Subsystem for Linux users are advised to upgrade to WSL 2 for better graphical application support.
