At least 34 people died after a migrant boat sank off northwestern Senegal, authorities said, up from an initially provisional toll of 21 as search operations continued. Separately, authorities on the Spanish island of El Hierro declared an emergency on Saturday after a surge in arrivals, with more than 3,300 people arriving aboard around 30 boats since the start of November.
The Senegalese interior ministry initially reported 21 bodies recovered and one survivor from the pirogue that came into difficulty off Kébémer, about 180 kilometres north of Dakar. The ministry described the toll as "provisional" and said search and rescue operations were still underway. Most of the victims were from the Leona and Thieppe districts in the same department, according to the newspaper Le Soleil.
The ministry reiterated the government's "determination to combat people-smuggling networks" and said it would work with neighbouring countries to address the issue. On Friday, Senegalese authorities intercepted 142 migrants on a similar boat bound for Spanish territory, a vessel that included nationals of multiple West African countries.
The Atlantic Route, which the United Nations' International Organization for Migration describes as a key pathway for West African migrants travelling to Europe, has seen thousands die in recent years. The IOM has noted that increased controls in traditional departure points in Senegal, Morocco and Mauritania have pushed some migrants further south, towards countries such as The Gambia, adding hundreds of kilometres to crossings and exposing people to greater risks.
Separately, authorities on the Canary Island of El Hierro declared an emergency on Saturday. Alpidio Armas, head of the El Hierro regional council, told Spanish television: “We are very concerned… by this sharp increase in arrivals. This is precisely what has led us to declare an emergency in order to ensure a framework of cooperation with higher-level institutions.” Armas said that conditions at the island's hospital had become “undesirable.” El Hierro is home to about 11,400 residents. Migrant arrivals reached a record high of 46,000 in 2024, after which they fell sharply due to increased surveillance and cooperation with African countries.
The migrant rights group Walking Borders reported that 635 people died in the first five months of this year attempting to reach the Canary Islands from West Africa.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- The disaster highlights the continued deadliness of the Atlantic migration route, where thousands have died.
- The emergency declaration on El Hierro shows the strain on small island communities as arrivals surge.
- The revision of the death toll underscores the difficulty of search efforts and the provisional nature of such figures.
Background
The Atlantic Route is a major migration path from West Africa to Spain's Canary Islands. Artisanal fishing boats known as pirogues often make the journey, which can span up to 2,200 kilometres. In recent years, record arrivals in 2024 were followed by a drop due to increased surveillance, but departures from alternative points have seen new surges.
Key Perspectives
Senegalese interior ministry: The toll is provisional and operations are ongoing; the government is determined to combat people-smuggling networks. It offered condolences to the families.
Alpidio Armas, head of El Hierro regional council: We are very concerned by the sharp increase in arrivals; conditions at the hospital have become undesirable.
What to Watch
- Whether search operations recover more bodies or survivors.
- How Spanish and Senegalese authorities respond to the surge on El Hierro and the departure points.
- Whether the emergency declaration on El Hierro leads to more resources from Spanish or EU authorities.
