The scale of the disaster has laid bare the vulnerability of Nepal’s heavy reliance on hydropower as Himalayan glaciers — the source of its rivers — melt at an accelerating rate due to global warming. The floods, which also left thousands missing, severed a critical link in a power system that until eight years ago suffered lengthy power cuts but now supplies enough electricity to export.
Operators of the 12 damaged facilities told the BBC they do not yet know whether any of the plants can be brought back into operation. Six of the plants are owned by the Nepal Electricity Authority, whose spokesman Rajan Dhakal assured Nepalese households that supply remains adequate but acknowledged that with climate-related disasters becoming more frequent, “the time has come for a rethink of our hydropower policy.”
The Trishuli River basin, where the damage occurred, is a key hub for hydro generation. The loss of more than a tenth of national capacity underscores the risk of concentrating energy infrastructure in a single geologically and climatically sensitive region. As global warming intensifies glacial melt and extreme rainfall events, the very mountains that give Nepal its hydro advantage increasingly threaten the stability of its grid.
