The quake hit at just before 1pm local time near the southern town of Tonosí, centered about 14km (9 miles) southwest of the remote community of Pitaloza Arriba, the US Geological Survey reported. The Institute of Geosciences of the University of Panama confirmed the magnitude and location, and reported the second 6.0 magnitude earthquake at 1.22pm.
Local newspaper La Prensa reported that buildings, schools and homes were evacuated across the Central American country as a result of the strong tremors. In the capital, Panama City, buildings shook and visibly shaken residents gathered outside, according to witnesses who spoke to Reuters.
The USGS said hazardous waves were possible along the coasts of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico. Authorities have issued tsunami warnings for the region.
