Tim Andrews, the recipient of the landmark xenotransplant, said the pig kidney gave him "hope" and spared him months of gruelling dialysis sessions. He described the idea of a pig organ as a "light at the end of the tunnel" when faced with a seven-year wait for a human kidney—far longer than the average five-year survival on dialysis.
The breakthrough, reported by the team at Mass General Brigham, demonstrates that genetically modified pig organs can serve as a viable "bridge" while patients wait for human donors. In the US, around 100,000 people are on the kidney transplant waiting list, but only about 25,000 transplants are performed each year. More than 7,000 people in the UK are also awaiting a kidney.
"I had a little bit of a shortage of time… it becomes very depressing," Andrews said. "Hope is the biggest thing, the chance to be free from the [dialysis] machine and live your life."
The pig kidney eventually failed and was removed, prompting a short bout of dialysis before a human donor was found. The case marks the longest recorded survival of a pig organ in a human patient, building on previous xenotransplantation attempts that lasted weeks or months.
