On 14 October, Wilson was shot and killed on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri. Prosecutors said a single shot fired into the back of her Buick Encore struck her in the back, incapacitating her and causing her to crash into a highway median. She was pronounced dead at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Her father Robert Hickman described her as excited about her life and future. "This was a senseless act," he said.
The new charges relate to an incident on 11 October, when St Louis metropolitan police received a report of a vehicle being shot just after exiting Interstate 55. Surveillance footage captured a white SUV matching the appearance of Herndon's Buick Enclave fleeing the scene. A shell casing was recovered and prosecutors said ballistics tests are underway to determine if it came from the same weapon used in Wilson's death.
Federal prosecutors said they tracked Herndon's vehicle from both shooting scenes to a Days Inn in Caseyville, Illinois, on 16 October. When officers approached Herndon's wife Taiya Herndon, the suspect emerged from the hotel room and began to flee, "screaming words about a shooting". Inside the room, prosecutors said they found an ABC-15 rifle, ammunition matching the type used in Wilson's shooting, a receipt from a gas station near the scene of her death, and handwritten notes describing police vehicles.
Herndon has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in St Louis County, Missouri, and as a felon in possession of a firearm in federal court in Illinois. His federal public defender did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
