Aaron Moses of the Wichita police department confirmed the deaths in a news conference, stating that one child died at the scene and one adult was killed. Officials have not released names or ages until families are notified. "This is a tragedy," Moses said.
The number of injured and the extent of their injuries remain unknown. Multiple victims were taken to local hospitals. Two juveniles were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident, according to police.
A witness told local station KWCH that a black pickup truck was seen "plowing through the youth soccer fields" and struck multiple people before coming to a halt 100 to 200 yards away. Dozens of emergency responders were observed providing aid and CPR to victims.
Moses said he did not know how fast the vehicle was travelling or how it entered the field. The investigation is ongoing. All events at the sports complex have been cancelled until further notice.
Mayor Lily Wu posted on social media: "I'm heartbroken by reports of a tragic incident at Stryker Sports Complex. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved."
Wichita police have set up a portal for the public to submit video evidence of the incident.
