Authorities in Georgia are searching for suspects after two people were killed and as many as 35 wounded when gunfire erupted at a large homecoming party in Vienna early Sunday. Sheriff Craig Peavy told local outlet WMAZ that the gathering included more than 1,000 people and that shots were fired at about 50 individuals in two locations roughly a block apart just after 1 a.m. Peavy said about 25 people were taken to hospital, with up to 35 potentially wounded. The identities of the deceased and a possible motive have not been released.
In Baltimore, police said a 12-year-old girl was killed and three others wounded on Saturday at Leon Day Park, where a youth football event was taking place. Commissioner Richard Worley stated the shooting stemmed from an argument between two men over a parking spot. “Two cowards pull guns on each other,” Worley said at a news conference. The girl was a bystander hit when one shooter “fired multiple rounds down range.” A 25-year-old woman with the girl was shot, as were two men aged 23 and 28; none suffered life-threatening injuries. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott condemned the violence. “Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12-year-old is gone,” he told reporters. “What happened out here today is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life.” Police are seeking two suspects who fled after the exchange of gunfire.
