Veteran trainer Geoff Allendorf will saddle Fast Feather when the colt debuts in the $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) at Rosehill on Saturday, with the 69-year-old realistic about the colt's chances.
Allendorf, who spent 19 years training in Macau until racing ceased there in 2024, now heads the Central Coast operation Mathland, an offshoot of Hong Kong businessman YP Cheng's Domeland stables. He took on the role in January.
“We are just hoping he can run good,” Allendorf said. “I know we've stepped him into the deep end, but there aren't a lot of two-year-old races around.”
Fast Feather, a $40,000 yearling, was a $101 chance off two runner-up trials at Randwick and Warwick Farm. Allendorf said he thought the Tassort colt had some ability but had overraced a little in his trials.
“I just want to see him drop his head, if he does that, I'll be tickled pink,” he said.
Allendorf, a former Sydney jockey who also rode in Hong Kong, said he was following Bart Cummings' philosophy that patience is key while working with his team of about 40 horses, predominantly two-year-olds.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- The race marks a new chapter for a veteran trainer who has had success overseas and is now rebuilding in Australia.
- A win would be a significant milestone for Allendorf and his new stable, signaling his ability to adapt to training young horses.
- The performance of Fast Feather will offer the first glimpse of the quality of Mathland's emerging team.
Background
Allendorf won premierships as both a jockey and trainer in Macau, where he spent 19 years training until the Macau Jockey Club closed in 2024. He helped rehome and transport horses before returning to Australia, initially with no plans to train again. A phone call on last year's Caulfield Cup day led to the Mathland opportunity.
What to Watch
- Fast Feather's performance on Saturday, particularly whether he settles and runs a competitive race.
- Allendorf's progress with his larger-than-expected team, with hopes of having half a dozen two-year-olds and four or five three-year-olds ready by January.
