In a study of 3,611 health questions, Google's AI Overviews drew on commercial sites over academic ones, and nearly half of cited claims were unsupported by sources.

In one line

Google’s health AI Overviews often cite weaker sources, make unsupported or uncited claims, and provide incomplete or inaccurate answers.

When people search for health advice, a generated summary may replace checking the original sources. Artificial intelligence (AI) can make answers quick to read, but errors in health information can have serious consequences.

The researchers compared Google’s AI Overviews with regular search results, checked whether cited pages supported the summaries’ claims, and graded answers against physician-written checklists.

AI Overviews often cited lower-quality sources. An estimated 56.7% of cited claims were supported by their linked pages, and answers earned 38.2% of possible checklist points. Citation support did not predict answer accuracy, so links alone are no guarantee that health advice is reliable.
