Cupertino, CA — Apple has refreshed its headless Mac lineup with new Mac mini and Mac Studio models that place a heavy emphasis on local AI performance, leveraging high-bandwidth unified memory and the company's Neural Accelerators. The Mac Studio, which became the flagship following the Mac Pro's retirement in March, is being billed as "our most powerful Mac ever," according to Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer. The Mac mini, meanwhile, is touted as "our most versatile Mac," with Srouji highlighting its role as "an always-on agentic device" — a nod to the surge in demand earlier this year from AI enthusiasts who discovered the compact desktop made an excellent home for open-weight AI models and local inference.
The Mac Studio comes in two chip configurations: M5 Max ($2,499) and M5 Ultra ($5,499). The M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB of unified memory with 1.2 TB/s bandwidth, though the 512GB option is not available until October. The existing 256GB memory upgrade costs an additional $4,000, suggesting a maxed-out Mac Studio with 256GB RAM and 16TB SSD will reach $18,299. The Mac mini is available with an M6 chip ($899) or an M5 Pro chip ($1,699). The M6 is the first Apple silicon built on a 2nm process, offering a 12-core CPU and improved energy efficiency. However, the base model includes only 16GB of shared memory, and upgrading to 32GB costs $400 — a steep premium that outgoing CEO Tim Cook acknowledged in June, attributing rising memory prices to AI demand.
Apple's unified memory architecture allows the CPU and GPU to share the same pool of RAM, making Macs with ample memory — such as 64GB or more — well-suited for GPU inference compared to PCs where system RAM and GPU VRAM are separate. The company's MLX machine learning framework further enhances performance on Apple silicon, drawing less power than a desktop GPU workstation. The Mac mini also supports Thunderbolt 5 clustering, enabling multiple units to be linked together for running large AI models on-device. Both machines include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thunderbolt 5 ports, with the Mac Studio also supporting PCIe expansion chassis.
Sri Santhanam, vice president of Apple's silicon engineering group, emphasized that the M6 chip combines a new CPU complex, additional CPU and GPU cores, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine to "power through workloads with amazing energy efficiency." The M5 Pro in the higher-end Mac mini offers more memory capacity (up to 64GB) and bandwidth (307 GB/s), making it a better fit for data-intensive development. While Apple has not disclosed sales projections, the company appears to be betting that the growing demand for private, on-device AI inference will justify the premium pricing.
