Google announced on Wednesday that Chrome is getting an AI-powered upgrade to autofill that can fill online forms with suggestions pulled from users' Gmail, such as flight confirmation numbers, membership IDs, tracking numbers, order numbers, addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers.

The update expands Google's Personal Intelligence, which already lets users connect their Google Apps to its Gemini assistant to retrieve certain details and use them to answer complex questions. With the new feature, Chrome can reference a user's email to suggest information needed to complete online forms.

As with other Personalized Intelligence features, users can decide whether to enable enhanced autofill from their Chrome settings. Google notes that sensitive data is encrypted.

The feature is rolling out to U.S. users on the desktop, and in the iOS and Android apps for Gemini in Chrome. Google's move echoes a widely appreciated Apple feature that automatically detects verification codes sent by text and displays them above the keyboard for one-tap entry.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The feature turns Gmail history into a form-filling shortcut, giving Chrome users another reason to stay inside Google's AI ecosystem.
  • It extends Google's Personal Intelligence from answering questions in Gemini to everyday browsing tasks, making AI assistance part of routine web use.
  • Users control whether the feature is on, and Google says sensitive data is encrypted, but the rollout begins only for U.S. users on desktop and mobile apps.

Background

Autofill is a long-standing browser convenience that stores details such as addresses, phone numbers and payment card information so users do not have to retype them on each website. This update goes further by mining Gmail for similar details, including order and tracking information. The move is part of Google's broader push to weave its Gemini assistant more deeply into its products, after already allowing users to connect Google Apps to Gemini for personalized answers.

What to Watch

  • Whether Google expands the feature beyond U.S. users and beyond the desktop and mobile apps where it is now rolling out.
  • How the opt-in setting in Chrome settings is presented, since user choice is the main control over how much Gmail data feeds into autofill.
  • Whether the feature works smoothly for frequent travelers and online shoppers, who are most likely to benefit from email-derived suggestions.
