A company spokesperson told 404 Media: 'Like many media companies, we're exploring how AI tools can support our creative and production teams. Today, generative AI is not used in episodes of our content.'
The policy allows AI for ideation, scripting, storyboarding, design, and animation, but with strict guardrails. For example, AI can be used to 'refine a human-authored draft,' but cannot generate 'character arcs, core plot twists, song lyrics' from scratch. Animators may use AI for 'utility tasks' but cannot 'alter a VO/actor's performance without checking with Legal.' The guidelines also forbid 'prompt to product'—AI-generated designs must be translated into studio-drawn concepts before entering production.
'Keep a human in the loop when using AI. AI is used to assist the artist, not be the artist,' the guidelines state. 'Our core IP (e.g. key characters/signature worlds and important backgrounds) must reflect substantial human creative input and intentionality.'
The move comes as YouTube faces a flood of low-quality AI-generated content targeting infants and toddlers. Moonbug's shows, including Cocomelon, Little Baby Bum, and Blippi, collectively draw hundreds of millions of subscribers on YouTube, with spinoffs on Netflix and a forthcoming move to Disney+. The studio is also working on a Cocomelon movie for Universal.
Moonbug's approach appears more deliberate than the 'slop purveyors' that dominate the platform, but the directive to 'start experimenting' signals that even the biggest players in children's entertainment are integrating AI into production pipelines. The company emphasizes that all content, whether AI-assisted or not, undergoes 'frame-by-frame human eyeball review' and rounds of creative and production feedback.
Legal and copyright concerns are front and center. The policy notes that 'we can only own (copyright) what a human has created,' requiring substantial human input in final executions. This reflects broader industry uncertainty around copyright protections for AI-generated work, a contentious issue in ongoing litigation and policy debates.
