CrossCountry, the long-distance train operator, suspended the majority of its services on Sunday following a power outage that affected its control centre in Birmingham. The disruption affects routes including Glasgow to Edinburgh, Manchester to Birmingham, Cheltenham to Cardiff, and Newcastle to Edinburgh, among others.
A spokesperson for CrossCountry confirmed that most services would remain cancelled until further notice, and advised passengers to check the company’s website or app for updates. The cause of the power cut is under investigation.
In response to the widespread cancellations, the transport secretary asked publicly owned operators to “lay on extra services where possible” to help stranded passengers. National Rail urged travelers to avoid non-essential journeys on affected routes and to seek alternative transport if possible.
Passengers with tickets for cancelled services are being offered refunds or the option to travel on alternative days. The disruption is expected to continue into Monday as engineers work to restore full power at the control centre.
CrossCountry operates a network that spans from the south of England to Scotland, and the cancellations have caused significant travel disruption across the country. The company has apologized for the inconvenience and said it is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
