The Cluster II mission launched in 2000 aboard two Soyuz rockets from Baikonur Cosmodrome, replacing the original quartet lost in the 1996 Ariane 5 maiden flight. The four satellites—Rumba, Salsa, Samba, and Tango—were tasked with studying Earth's magnetosphere in three dimensions. Designed for five years, the mission was repeatedly extended thanks to engineering ingenuity.
After about a decade, battery failures meant each satellite effectively died during eclipses. Engineers devised workarounds to restart them in a controlled fashion. The mission finally ended science operations in 2024, and controllers began a disposal campaign targeting reentries over remote ocean areas. Salsa reentered in 2024, Rumba in 2025, and now Samba and Tango.
Stijn Lemmens, senior space debris mitigation analyst at ESA, noted the scientific value of the controlled reentries: "When a spacecraft reenters the atmosphere, it experiences extreme forces. Temperatures soar, materials melt and vaporize, and the spacecraft gradually breaks apart. But how exactly?" The reentries offer a chance to observe the process.
Spacecraft operations manager Bruno Sousa, in a 2020 interview, recalled the challenge of the battery failures: "The first time it happened, this was a rather uncontrolled shutdown... the spacecraft were not designed to be switched off." Yet engineers persisted with a "Never give up. Never surrender" attitude, keeping the quartet alive far beyond its design life.
