The European Space Agency is pressing on with development of its Envision robotic orbiter after NASA officials concluded they would likely not deliver a planned US-built synthetic aperture radar instrument, the mission's project scientist said.
The radar was to be Envision's primary tool for mapping the Venusian surface, which is permanently obscured by dense clouds of sulfuric acid. Radar remains the most effective way to penetrate this veil and reveal the terrain below. Scientists plan to use Envision to search for signs of active volcanism on Earth's sister planet.
NASA and ESA signed a memorandum of understanding in 2024 outlining the partnership. Under the agreement, NASA would supply the radar instrument and provide tracking and communications support through its Deep Space Network. In return, ESA would include US researchers on Envision's science team. Europe was already building the spacecraft, its other science instruments, and providing the launch aboard an Ariane 6 rocket.
With NASA's withdrawal, ESA will now seek an alternative European-built radar or reconfigure the mission without a US-supplied instrument. The agency has not announced a specific replacement plan but has stated the mission is proceeding on schedule.
