Huawei says the Kirin 950 Pro is built around its "Tau Scaling" architecture, which it claims arranges components closer together to reduce die size and improve performance without requiring the advanced chipmaking processes practiced by TSMC and Intel. The company said the new silicon delivers 42 percent higher performance than the chip used in the three-screen phone it shipped last year.
Huawei first described Tau Scaling last May, when analysts characterized the work as interesting but not a breakthrough — a view Huawei disputes.
The chip targets a narrow market segment. Counterpoint Research expects Huawei to end 2026 with 24 percent of the folding phone market, which the firm estimates accounted for just 1.6 percent of smartphone sales last year. The announcement also lands days before pundits expect Apple to debut a folding iPhone, a device Counterpoint predicts will capture 25 percent of the folding phone market by the end of the year.
At the launch event, Huawei executives pointed to its non-Android HarmonyOS, which now runs on 85 million devices — strong uptake since the operating system arrived in October 2024, though still a fraction of the broader smart device market.
Huawei has not said whether it plans to adapt the Kirin 950 Pro's technology for other roles, such as reducing China's reliance on products from AMD, Intel, or Nvidia. Western chipmakers are aware that Beijing is steering local buyers toward domestic alternatives, but whether Chinese silicon succeeds beyond the Middle Kingdom remains an open question. Huawei's hardware and HarmonyOS ecosystem have not achieved notable success outside China, unlike rivals Xiaomi, Oppo, and Honor, which have won solid sales across Europe, Africa, and Latin America with Android phones tied to Google services.
