Aidan Laughery ran for 123 yards and a touchdown and Collin Dixon made a diving 23-yard touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Illinois (4-3, 2-2). Freshman quarterback Michael Clayton II completed 11 of 18 passes for 84 yards and two scores, including the play-action toss to Christian Abney that put the Illini ahead 14-10 early in the third quarter. Clayton started in place of fifth-year senior Katin Houser, who broke his hand against Michigan State on Oct. 10.
Oregon (4-3, 2-2) did not go quietly. Dylan Raiola threw for 246 yards on 27-of-41 passing, and Jordon Davison rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown. But the Ducks played without four of their top wide receivers: Evan Stewart was suspended indefinitely after a DUI arrest, and Jalen Lott, Messiah Hampton and Jeremiah McClellan sat out with injuries. Star quarterback Dante Moore missed his third straight game with a concussion. Oregon kicker Gage Hurych, fresh off being named Big Ten special teams player of the week, missed three field goals, including a 39-yard attempt in the fourth quarter.
"Give credit to Illinois. They were the tougher team and that showed up in the second half," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "We have to evaluate who we are. Each person needs to look within and identify where they can improve." Illinois coach Bret Bielema was effusive about his team. "I thought this team could do a lot better than what we've done," he said. Of Dixon's highlight-reel catch, Bielema added, "I have no idea how Collin made that catch." He described the quarterback rotation orchestrated by offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. as "poetry in motion."
Illinois plays next at Maryland. Oregon will host No. 24 Northwestern on Halloween.
