After more than a year of silence following the missed 2025 target, ISRO has broken its silence on the Gaganyaan program. Speaking at the third annual National Space Day earlier this week, Dr Narayanan revealed that testing of the rocket and crew module is nearly complete. The first of three planned test missions will launch this year, using India's LVM3 launcher — a vehicle that has flown nine times without failure.
The version of LVM3 used for crewed missions will be human-rated, featuring a crew escape system with solid-fuel motors designed to rapidly pull the crew capsule to safety in an emergency. The Gaganyaan crew module can carry three Vyomanauts — a Sanskrit-derived term India has unofficially adopted for its astronauts — and is designed to spend three days in a 400-kilometre orbit before splashing down into Indian waters.
ISRO previously stated it would include a robot on at least one test flight, but it remains unclear whether that plan is still in effect. The agency has not announced timelines for the second and third test flights, nor for the first crewed mission.
Dr Narayanan and other officials used National Space Day to outline broader Indian space ambitions, including the goal of operating a space station by 2035. Increased private sector involvement was also discussed, with Indian companies potentially manufacturing the launchers ISRO uses — a model that mirrors NASA's approach of contracting commercial launch providers while building only one government vehicle, the Space Launch System. Japan’s space agency takes a different route, defining specifications and contracting industrial giants like Mitsubishi to build vehicles under JAXA’s management.
The announcement marks a significant milestone for India’s space program, which has gained international recognition for its cost-effective missions, including the Chandrayaan lunar probes and the Mars Orbiter Mission.
