A Bronte home once owned by Love Is in the Air singer John Paul Young has resold at auction for $11.95 million to a local family, about 45 times its 1985 sale price of $265,500.

The Federation house, which now includes a three-bedroom home and a self-contained studio with a saltwater pool and ocean views, was sold by the Spanko family. Retired solicitor Rennie Spanko and his wife Pauline owned the property since 1985 and sold it as they downsize.

John Paul Young, perhaps best known for the 1977 hit Love Is in the Air and his appearances on Countdown, sold the home to the Spankos for $265,500. Young previously told Domain he had "great times" at the residence.

Bronte's median house price fell 15.2 per cent over the year to September to $5,235,000, according to the Domain House Price Report, but the suburb has recorded multi-million-dollar auction results. Alexander Phillips of Ray White Phillips & Co, who sold the home alongside Thomas Fuller, James Ball and Edward Quince, said Bronte was a very resilient suburb in down markets. "It's because of the community aspect, access to the city and the beach. It's not a transient suburb like Bondi or Coogee," he told this masthead. Ball added the appeal was down to the "amenities, proximity to schooling and the healthy lifestyle on offer".

In other high-end property news, a two-level penthouse at One Sydney Harbour in Barangaroo has hit the market with a price guide of $85 million. With 700 square metres of internal space, the penthouse was purchased by Qing Zhong, managing director and chief executive of mining company Admiralty Resources, for $48.14 million in 2025 and has never been occupied. Selling agent Hui Xu said the penthouse would appeal to internationally active entrepreneurs seeking a prestigious Sydney base and Australian local families seeking space and privacy.

NRL star Nathan Cleary has reduced the asking rent on his Curl Curl cottage from $2350 to $2000 per week. Cleary purchased the property for $5.5 million in June and has since transformed it with new floorboards, a brand-new kitchen and an updated bathroom.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The sale shows significant property appreciation in tightly held Sydney suburbs over four decades.
  • It contrasts with the 15.2% decline in Bronte's median house price over the past year, indicating demand for premium homes.
  • The high-end listings reflect ongoing activity in Sydney's prestige market, from multi-million dollar penthouses to rental adjustments.

Background

John Paul Young rose to fame with the 1977 hit Love Is in the Air and featured on Countdown. He sold the Bronte Federation house in 1985. The Spanko family held the property for 41 years before downsizing. Bronte has a tight community and has seen mixed market conditions, with a dip in median prices but resilient auction results.

What to Watch

  • The Barangaroo penthouse sale, priced at $85 million, which could become one of Sydney's most expensive transactions.
  • Nathan Cleary's rental reduction may signal market softening in the Northern Beaches.
  • Upcoming auction results in Bronte as the market adjusts to changing conditions.
