At least four Palestinians were killed in Gaza on Saturday, including two girls whose tent caught fire at a camp for displaced people, as Israeli attacks continued despite a ceasefire that has nominally been in place for more than a year.
Al-Awda Hospital confirmed the death of Diaa Abu al-Rous, a Palestinian teacher, in shelling of the Nuseirat refugee camp. A medical source at al-Shifa Hospital confirmed the death of Arafat al-Arair, who had been seriously injured days earlier when Israel struck a vehicle in the Tel al-Hawa neighbourhood, southwest of Gaza City. Nasser Medical Complex confirmed the deaths of the two girls, who died from injuries sustained the previous evening when their tent caught fire at a camp in al-Mawasi, in Khan Younis. The cause of the fire was not clear.
Gaza's Health Ministry said at least six Palestinians had been killed over the past 48 hours, bringing the number killed since the October 2025 ceasefire to 1,580, with another 26 people injured in the same period. The ministry said 5,711 others had been injured since the nominal ceasefire came into effect.
On Friday, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights warned that Israeli forces in Gaza were continuing to displace Palestinians and that their actions continued to raise concerns of ethnic cleansing. The office said Palestinians were increasingly being forced into a shrinking area of the territory, which it said had been decimated following three years of Israeli siege, and that Israeli forces were destroying what remained of Gaza's civilian infrastructure.
According to Al Jazeera's reporting, the Israeli military is working to expand its control over Gaza's territory to 70 percent, following an order from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in May. Reporting from Deir el-Balah, Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu Azzoum said Israel was targeting civilians as it sought to displace Palestinians from the city. "We have testimonies from people who have evacuated their homes in the eastern part of Deir el-Balah city, confirming that the Israeli military has adjusted the yellow demarcation line by opening fire on civilians to push them from these areas," he said.
Talks aimed at permanently ending the war under United States President Donald Trump's peace plan have stalled, and reconstruction efforts have yet to begin amid disputes between Hamas and Israel over implementation. Hamas says it will not fully disarm until Israel withdraws entirely from Gaza. Israel says it will not leave the territory until Hamas forfeits its weapons.
Analysis
Why This Matters
- The deaths show the ceasefire has not ended attacks in Gaza, with 1,580 Palestinians killed since it took effect, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.
- The UN human rights office warns that Israeli actions continue to raise concerns of ethnic cleansing as Palestinians are pushed into a shrinking area of the territory.
- The standoff between Hamas and Israel over disarmament and withdrawal has stalled peace talks and delayed reconstruction.
Background
The ceasefire that took effect in October 2025 paused but did not end the fighting in Gaza. Talks under US President Donald Trump's peace plan have stalled, and reconstruction has not begun. The UN human rights office says the territory has been decimated by three years of Israeli siege, with civilian infrastructure still being destroyed.
Key Perspectives
- Hamas: says it will not fully disarm until Israel withdraws entirely from Gaza.
- Israel: says it will not leave the territory until Hamas forfeits its weapons.
- OHCHR: warns Israeli forces are continuing to displace Palestinians and that their actions continue to raise concerns of ethnic cleansing.
What to Watch
- Whether the stalled talks over Trump's peace plan resume and reconstruction begins.
- Whether the Israeli military carries out its reported plan to expand control over 70 percent of Gaza's territory.
- Whether the death toll continues to rise as attacks persist despite the ceasefire.
