A man has been shot in the leg and struck on the head and arms with iron bars by four masked men who entered a house in County Antrim early on Tuesday.

Police said the attack happened at a property in Straham View in Dervock, near Ballymoney, shortly after 00:30 GMT. One of the masked men was armed with a handgun. The group then made off in a Toyota Yaris, which was later found burnt out on Burnquarter Road.

Three other people who were in the house at the time were uninjured but left badly shaken, police said.

"Officers along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended and the man was taken to hospital for treatment for his injuries," Det Inspector Ballentine from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Analysis

Why This Matters

  • The attack left a man in hospital with gunshot and blunt-force injuries, and three other people badly shaken.
  • It adds to concern about violent incidents in the area and will put pressure on police to identify those responsible.
  • The PSNI's appeal for witnesses means more information could emerge that changes the picture of what happened.

Background

Attacks in which masked men enter a home and assault a resident have a long history in Northern Ireland, where such incidents have often been carried out by paramilitary groups. Police treat them as serious violent crime and investigate them as such.

What to Watch

  • Whether the PSNI's witness appeal produces sightings of the masked men or of the Toyota Yaris before it was found burnt out.
  • Any update from police on the man's condition and whether arrests follow.
