Police in Lower Saxony said on Tuesday morning that a BMW was driven deliberately into a group of people in Neustadt am Rübenberge, a town near Hannover. Four to five people suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, a police spokesperson said.
A police patrol carrying out routine traffic checks intervened and shot at the car to stop it. An unknown number of suspects then fled the car on foot and remain at large, the spokesperson said.
The exact roles of those involved and the sequence of events are still under investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the individuals involved knew each other and that the perpetrators likely targeted the group rather than acting at random, the spokesperson added.
A reporter for the German DPA news agency described several damaged cars at the scene, with flat tires, a smashed rear window and bullet holes. Forensic analysis of the crime scene was ongoing.
