Under the contract, Blue Origin will design, develop, integrate, launch, and operate the network as part of NASA’s broader space communications and navigation infrastructure. The architecture will consist of a high-performance telecommunications spacecraft orbiting Mars, responsible for transmitting science data, imagery, navigation information, and critical mission communications for spacecraft operating on and around the planet.
NASA announced the award on Tuesday, following a request for proposals issued in May. The agency said the selection marks a milestone in its strategy to expand communications and navigation services beyond Earth and the Moon, establishing a foundation for sustained exploration of Mars in the coming decades.
The network, managed by NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program, is intended to support the growing number of robotic missions under the Artemis program, which aims to send astronauts to the Moon and eventually prepare for human missions to Mars. As data demands increase, NASA is pursuing a purpose-built network capable of providing greater capacity, reliability, and operational flexibility.
The contract reflects NASA’s increasing reliance on commercial partners for transportation and communications services, having already tapped private-sector capabilities for Earth orbit and lunar activities. By partnering with Blue Origin, NASA aims to focus on exploration and scientific discovery while leveraging commercial expertise.
