The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off at 7:26 a.m. EDT from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The telescope has now separated from the rocket and is on a 100-day journey to a vantage point roughly one million miles from Earth, where it will begin its survey of the universe.
"Roman is exactly the kind of success story we want to see across NASA," said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman in a statement. "Delivered ahead of schedule and on budget, this mission reflects more than a decade of dedication from the NASA workforce and our industry partners."
Named after Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer, the telescope pairs a large field of view with infrared vision. According to NASA, it will capture panoramic views of space with a field of vision 100 times larger than both the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. The mission will search for dark matter and dark energy, and conduct a census of planets outside our solar system.
Nicky Fox, a NASA administrator, said the telescope "is going to change the way we look at the universe" and predicted it would discover "tens of thousands, maybe even 100,000 new exoplanets."
Jackie Townsend, a project manager on the Roman telescope, described the launch as "glorious" during a news conference afterward. "The ride was magnificent. It put us right where we wanted to be," she said.
President Donald Trump dialed into the same news conference to congratulate the team. "You're the hottest in space, and we have the hottest country anywhere in the world. So, let's keep it all going. You're a big part of it," he said. Later, on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "Congratulations to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, and the Great Patriots at NASA, on a successful launch. This is THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICA!"
The telescope's journey to space was not always certain. The Guardian reported that the $4.3 billion observatory survived two rounds of proposed White House budget cuts under Trump's administration. The telescope is partly built from repurposed spy satellite hardware, according to reports.
