Meanwhile, over 200 million kilometers away, the Perseverance rover used its Mastcam-Z camera system to record another transit of Phobos, Mars's larger moon, across the Sun. The resulting images show the irregularly shaped moon—roughly 27 by 22 by 18 kilometers—silhouetted against the bright orange solar disk. These observations, credited to NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASU/MSSS/SSI, help scientists refine their understanding of Phobos's orbit, which is slowly decaying, and its eventual fate of either crashing into Mars or breaking apart into a ring.
The two announcements, published within hours of each other, underscore NASA's sustained commitment to both planetary science and Earth observation. "MAIA's ground-based network gives us a street-level view of pollution that satellite data alone cannot provide," said a NASA spokesperson. The Phobos transit observations, now routine for Perseverance, continue to yield valuable data about Mars's natural satellite.
While the MAIA project focuses on public health in urban environments, Perseverance's work supports future mission planning. The rover, which landed in Jezero Crater in 2021, continues to search for signs of ancient microbial life and collect samples for potential return to Earth.
