The Roman Space Telescope is making its way to L2, a stable gravitational balancing point about a million miles from Earth, according to a NASA update. During this commissioning period, scientists and engineers are verifying that the observatory is performing as expected. NASA notes that the schedule is subject to change as the team assesses progress and makes adjustments.
Early deployment milestones have already been completed. One hour and 23 minutes after launch, Roman began emerging from its tight launch configuration, with its solar panels and sunshade deploying to shade the rest of the observatory and provide power to its systems.
In the coming days, the spacecraft's antenna is expected to swing out into position, and a visor-like deployable aperture cover will move into place to permanently reveal and shade the primary mirror.
NASA also released a visualization showing the stable halo orbit Roman will occupy around L2, where the combined gravity of the Sun and Earth, together with the spacecraft's motion, will keep it positioned for long-duration observations.
