Nvidia's controversial DLSS 5, set to officially launch today with NBA2K27 as the first supported title, was initially positioned as an RTX 50-series exclusive. However, after modders successfully leaked and ported an early DLL to run on older hardware — including RTX 40-series cards — the company has changed course.
"Our current focus is on optimizing performance for the GeForce RTX 50 Series," Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj told The Verge, confirming that official support for RTX 40-series GPUs is now in the pipeline. The leaked version has also been modified by modders to work on a range of additional systems, though Nvidia has not commented on those unofficial ports.
The rollout has drawn sharp criticism from some corners of the developer community. The RPCS3 team, which maintains the open-source PlayStation 3 emulator, posted on X that they have seen "the slop" generated by the leaked DLSS 5 DLL when tested on their renderer. "Whilst the gaming industry pushes more upscalers and frame generation to hallucinate games and hide their lack of optimisation, we do not ship any of that slop," the official account wrote.
The RPCS3 developers elaborated that modern temporal upscalers are difficult to implement for PS3-era games because those titles do not expose the motion-vector data the AI requires. They noted that their low-level RSX emulation makes reconstructing that data impractical, forcing the emulator to rely on spatial upscalers such as FSR 1, bilinear, and nearest-neighbor scaling.
The post drew a mixed response. One user called RPCS3's stance "possibly the dumbest" they could have expected, arguing that DLSS and FSR frame generation can complement game-engine optimizations rather than simply masking poor performance, and that Nvidia's Reflex technology helps mitigate the latency penalty associated with frame generation.
Nvidia has positioned DLSS 5 as a breakthrough in neural rendering, promising movie-grade visual realism through AI that deduces how scene features like characters, skin, hair, and environmental lighting should look in the real world. The company says the technology provides different AI models and controls that allow artists to decide what gets enhanced, where the effect appears, and how strongly it is applied. For players, DLSS 5 will appear as a simple on/off graphics option, with detailed decisions handled by developers.
However, the technology is resource-intensive, and gamers should expect a noticeable drop in frame rates, especially with initial implementations. DLSS 5 is only officially supported on RTX 50-series desktop and mobile GPUs, as well as GeForce Now, with the upcoming RTX 40-series support to follow.
