Video footage from Thursday night at the American Airlines Center shows at least one audience member shouting “He should be shot!” after Senator Ted Cruz named New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a Democrat holding radical views. The same cry followed when Cruz mentioned Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and Texas Senate candidate James Talarico. Cruz did not pause or respond to the shouting from the stage, and it remains unclear whether he heard it. The senator did not respond to a request for comment from the Guardian.
The outbursts came on the same night Republicans had convened to honor the memory of Charlie Kirk, whose killing was the subject of warnings against violent political language. The contrast between the party's stated concern over political violence and the crowd’s calls for harm against Democratic figures has drawn attention to the handling of such rhetoric at the convention.
